Criteria for Consideration for AED approval at MSU (central campus)

  1. Interest on part of unit, or recommendation from Central administration.
  2. Data that indicate that population in building has a significant proportion of people over 55-60 in the building.
  3. Data that indicate time for EMS arrival is over 5 minutes the majority of the time, or prolonged construction that impairs EMS access.
  4. Activity in the building that significantly increases the likelihood of cardiac arrythmia’s that are life threatening (for example, regular electrical work).
  5. Regulatory requirement for AED for grant funding or accreditation
  6. Commitment to MSU’s designated vendor
  7. Commitment to providing records on a yearly basis that documents training of employees and equipment maintenance records.
  8. Interface with East Lansing and Meridian EMS equipment (handled through purchasing).
  9. Tamper proof wall-mounted containers for AED's.
  10. Committment to completion of report after use of AED (see form).
  11. Initial training (see below) prior to installation.
  12. Cooperation with regular audits on training and equipment.
  13. Designation of Building Coordinator responsible for compliance with policy, including training, maintenance, testing, and recordkeeping.
  14. Funds available for unit(s), required wall mounted and alarmed cabinet(s), supplies, spare batteries.
  15. Maintenance of all documentation concerning repairs and replacements with the AED unit.
  16. Completion of Post-Incident Report form each time a unit is used or there is an attempt to use the unit.

Training includes:

  • Current certification in American Red Cross CPR training and/or American Heart Association Heartsaver AED course is required for personnel who will use the AED with renewal as required to maintain certification. Information concerning certified training can be obtained through Risk Mangement.
  • The entire department must receive emergency management training. Each department will be trained in combined response that includes help to the victim, crowd control, calling and watching for the EMS, and holding elevators or doors, etc.
